Why Leadership Training ‘DONE TO YOU’ no longer works ?

The reason why leaders can struggle to inspire and get the best results from their people, often lies in the lack of leadership development and some companies taking short cuts.

It happened to me when I was a leader in a very large organisation and its still happening today. We send people away on a one week Leadership Development training course, expecting them to come back into the hot seat as great leaders, then wonder why the results don’t improve
Different thinking is required to meet today’s leadership challenges.

Leadership Coaching, in other words, ‘DONE WITH YOU’ is what is needed in today’s dynamic and predominantly hybrid world of working. A recent Gallup poll reported that 60% of the world’s workforce are emotionally detached at work and 19% are miserable!

So, how do we win hearts and minds and why is it important?

This shift from Leadership Training into Leadership Coaching for our future talent is transforming organizations because great leadership requires a range of styles practiced and perfected over time. This only happens with regular, concentrated feedback from both internal peers and managers and working WITH external, independent, professional coaches where there are no barriers to any political agenda, confidentiality, and raw honesty.

The leadership journey starts with learning to lead oneself, with self-awareness as the cornerstone upon which leading great teams and organizations is built. Daniel Goleman author of The New Leaders identifies Level 5 leaders as those who have traveled the leadership journey from 1 to 5 and reached the pinnacle of leadership. This journey requires a roadmap and a coaching platform that can map and track the progress of both the individual and the organization, every step of the way.

The combination of a coachable leader, with an independent coach and a coaching system that acts as a ’satnav’ to guide the leadership journey, in my opinion, are the essential ingredients to building an organization which develops, nurtures, and grows great leaders.

In a nutshell – it’s time to do away with the leadership training ‘sheep dip’ approach and invest in longer-term leadership development coaching solutions, which deliver a far more valuable and impactful Return on Investment.
