Health & Social Care Programmes

If you work within the Health & Social Care sector, we know that you are quite accustomed to change. It is often said that the only constant is change and it’s not always comfortable. Implemented well, change can lead to exciting innovations and huge leaps in performance. Implemented poorly, you could be left with a disengaged, disempowered workforce, and a drastic decline in the quality of service that you offer the people that you serve.

Any change, no matter how big or small leads to a gap. A gap in performance, a gap in knowledge, a gap in skill, or perhaps a gap in confidence. Navigating change on your own can be a challenge; having to lead a team through it adds another dynamic. You don’t have to do it alone.

Strengths-Based Practice

The main aim of the Care Act 2014 is to promote people’s wellbeing and independence. Through a strengths-based approach to the assessment process, people can be supported to understand their needs, realise what they can do, and how to best use their skills and networks, to achieve their outcomes. Many Adult Social Care departments have made great strides in adapting their models and practice to ensure alignment with the legislation, with those doing it very well ensuring that the principles are a fundamental part of the internal culture, and therefore the wellbeing of the workforce too. Other departments may be earlier on in their journeys with peripheral changes made but perhaps having not yet cracked the true cultural shift. Wherever you are on this journey, New Level Results can help.

Leaders, Managers, Lead Practitioners, and frontline staff will all play a vital and valuable role in the introduction and sustainment of strengths-based practice. When done well an exceptional cultural shift will be the result. This move away from the traditional will not necessarily be easy for all. Some of the underpinning principles offer a level of ‘freedom’ not experienced by the workforce before. A backdrop of permission and empowerment will be required but will not necessarily be ‘given’ or ‘accepted’ easily and readily without a culture that supports it. To be successful you will need to be effective, engaging and energised conduits of the model’s concepts; not only do you need to be comfortable and confident in your own personal application of them, but equally you must be able to support, coach and mentor others to do the same.

You might encounter interference and day to day ‘stuff’ that gets in the way. This may include: fear, anxiety or confusion; absent or misunderstood processes; inequity in roles and responsibilities; office politics and behaviours; confidence and training issues; or poor alignment to corporate values and ideals. There is a risk that ‘interference’ could prevent these individuals from being as impactful as they could be; and in turn have a detrimental impact on the roll out of strengths-based practice.

The role of a Strengths-Based Coach is to reduce interference so that individuals and teams maximise their potential and achieve incredible results and optimal performance. At the heart of coaching lie the principles of goal orientation, having a different conversation, strengths assessment, resourcefulness, creative thinking, hope induction and meaningful choice – which are all incredibly strengths-based. Coaching is the choice for the forward thinking and inspirational leaders looking to break the ceiling on their organisation’s potential.

Leadership & Management

Leaders and Managers play a vital and valuable role in the day to day business operations. It is widely acknowledged that it is management thinking that leads to a system of work being designed the way it is; and therefore ultimately the resulting performance of that system too. Leadership and Management behaviours, whether positive or negative, tend to cascade down through an organization. It is at this level where a significant positive shift in mindset, behaviour and action will create a fundamental climate of improvement.

Like all team members, each and every Leader and Manager will have great potential – yet if you were to ask them how much of their full potential they are using in their roles, what do you think they would say? Research studies show that most employees reply somewhere between 25% and 70%, with the most common being 40%. That’s a serious gap, and is an existing concern within several local Councils.

Being a Leader or a Manager in a Health & Social Care setting can be incredibly challenging. The levels of change are unprecedented. This also means that individuals in these roles could not be playing a more important part. They need to be supported, nurtured and equipped with the tools, confidence and competence that they need to be the best they can be.
